Media Advisory: Indigenous Climate Action on the Ground in Brazil for UNFCCC COP30
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, October 29, 2025
Indigenous Climate Action (ICA), an Indigenous-led climate justice organization from Turtle Island (Canada), will be sending a delegation to Brazil next week for preparatory meetings and participation at the 2025 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30).
WHO: Indigenous Climate Action
WHAT: UNFCCC COP30
WHEN: November 3, 2025 — November 22, 2025
WHERE: Belém of Pará, Brazil
While on the ground in Brazil, ICA will participate in the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) and the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC).
During negotiations, ICA will be following and acting on key moments that could threaten the rights and self-determination of Indigenous peoples globally, including:
Climate Financing
Just Transition and Adaptation
False solutions and Nature-based Solutions
Carbon Markets and Other Market-based Solutions
ICA’s COP30 delegation will contribute to a growing chorus of delegates calling out false solutions and climate policies that only serve corporations, ongoing colonialism, and predatory capitalism.
By uplifting Indigenous knowledge and demanding the legal rights of Indigenous peoples, ICA is continuing to fight for a decolonial and climate-just future for all.
ICA delegates will be attending and speaking at a number of side events. To follow along with their work and see upcoming events, please visit www.IndigenousClimateAction.com/cop30.

The Risks and Threats of Nature-based Climate Solutions
Date: November 15, 2025
Time: 15:35-16:50 (GMT-3)
Location: Indigenous Peoples Pavilion, Blue Zone, UNFCCC COP30
Nature-based Climate Solutions (NbCS) are being pushed forward in Indigenous territories without free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), and in ways that echo colonial patterns of extraction and control. NbCS cannot succeed as a solution to the climate crisis without addressing structural injustices and the legacy of colonization in which it is built upon. This panel will explore the risks and threats of Nature-based Climate Solutions (NbCS) in so-called Canada by outlining the lived-experiences, critiques and strategies of Indigenous Peoples and communities.
Launch of The Woven Project - A Global Indigenous Climate Justice Project
Date: November 17, 2025
Time: 12:10-13:25 (GMT-3)
Location: Indigenous Peoples Pavilion, Blue Zone, UNFCCC COP30
The session will launch the Woven Project and initial findings of our research on Mapping Indigenous People in the Global Movement. Woven is a climate justice project that utilizes a bottom up climate justice and Indigenous rights based approach to building resilient climate solutions that are driven and guided by Indigenous peoples. The project will explore and deepen strategies to strengthen Indigenous rights advocacy at the regional, national and international levels while simultaneously contributing to global climate solutions for overall planetary health, climate change mitigation and a just transition. This rights based approach and framework will focus on advancing and advocating for the implementation of the rights of Indigenous Peoples outlined in the United Nations Declaration On the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), with an emphasis on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC; Article 19 UNDRIP) and Indigenous Land Tenure.
