Há mais de 15 meses, foi relatado que as lagoas de rejeitos da mina Kearl da Imperial Oil Ltd. vazaram mais de 5,3 milhões de litros de óleo tóxico na bacia hidrográfica de Athabasca. A Imperial, juntamente com o órgão regulador de energia de Alberta (AER), não notificou as comunidades indígenas afetadas por mais de 9 meses após a descoberta do vazamento.
